Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that exists naturally in the earth's atmosphere. It is composed of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms, represented by the chemical formula CO2.

Where does CO2 come from?

Carbon dioxide comes from natural sources such as human respiration, volcanoes, plant decay and burning fuels. In fact, 87% of all human-produced carbon dioxide emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas, and oil.

Is CO2 harmful to humans?

CO2 is only toxic at high concentrations in confined spaces. When CO2 or any gas displaces the normal oxygen in the air, it can result in headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and convulsions.

What are the common uses for Carbon Dioxide?

Fire Suppression: CO2 is often used as a suppression agent to displace the oxygen and suppress the fire.
Carbonation of Beverages: CO2 puts the "fizz" in beverages like soda, beer, and wine.
Industrial Processes: CO2 is also used in wastewater treatment, in remediate industrial spills, and as a cleaning solvent.
Food Preservation: CO2 can be used to preserve or freeze foods.
Medical Applications: CO2 is often used as dry ice to flash freeze biological samples and provide refrigeration for vaccines.
