Consistency in Business: Lessons from 20 Years in Gas Detection & Safety
Discover what 20 years in gas detection and safety has taught CO2Meter about consistency, customer trust, innovation and long-term success in the industrial gas and beverage industry.

Written By: Joshua Pringle, Executive Vice President at CO2Meter

Twenty years sounds like a long time until you look back and realize how quickly it went.

In 2026, CO2Meter is celebrating its 20th anniversary. What began in 2006 as a small operation focused on gas sensing technology has grown into a global provider of gas detection, gas safety and analytical solutions.

The company’s first product, the TIM8 desktop CO2 monitor, reflected this approach by delivering accurate indoor air quality measurements without the complexity of traditional instrumentation. Early growth was fueled by direct customer engagement, trade shows and a clear market need for real-world, easy-to-deploy gas monitoring solutions.

During those two decades, nearly everything around us has evolved.

Gas detection technology has improved. Safety requirements have changed. Customers expect more information, faster service and better support. Gas distributors and beverage equipment companies are finding new ways to sell, install and service their equipment.

But one principle has remained remarkably consistent:

The companies people trust are usually the companies that consistently deliver.

After years of working alongside gas distributors, beverage gas suppliers, equipment manufacturers, installers and end users, I have seen firsthand how important that principle is.

Why Is Consistency Important in Business?

Consistency builds trust.

Think about your best customers. They probably don't continue doing business with you because of one great delivery five years ago or one installation that went perfectly.

They stay because you have delivered for them repeatedly.

The gas arrives when it is supposed to. The technician understands the equipment. The installation is completed correctly. Someone answers the phone when there is a question.

And when something does go wrong, because eventually something will, your team takes care of it.

That is consistency, and over time, consistency becomes your reputation

For companies operating in the industrial gas and beverage gas space, that reputation is especially important because customers depend on our products and services to keep their operations running.

Consistency Matters in the Beverage Gas Industry

For example, consider a restaurant, brewery, bar or beverage facility.

Most employees and customers probably are not thinking about the CO2 supply, beverage dispensing system or gas safety equipment when everything is operating correctly.

But they certainly notice when something isn't.

A restaurant depends on a reliable supply of carbon dioxide for beverage carbonation. Employees depend on properly installed equipment. Facilities using or storing CO2 may also rely on fixed gas detection equipment to continuously monitor the environment and alert personnel if CO2 concentrations become elevated.

Every part of that system requires someone to do their job correctly.

That is why being the distributor, manufacturer, installer or service company that customers know they can call is incredibly valuable.

Reliability creates confidence and confidence creates long-term customers

Consistency Does Not Mean Standing Still

There is an important distinction here.

Being consistent does not mean doing the same thing forever.

In fact, companies that have been successful for decades are usually very good at changing.

The gas and beverage industries have changed tremendously over the past 20 years.Gas detection equipment has become more advanced. Customers have access to more information. Safety and compliance have become larger parts of conversations with facility owners. Technology has changed how equipment is monitored, installed and serviced.

It's the successful companies that evolve alongside those changes.

At CO2Meter, we have experienced that firsthand.

When CO2Meter began in 2006, the company was primarily focused on indoor air quality and making gas measurement easier to understand and access.

As customers' needs changed, so did our solutions.

In 2013, CO2Meter introduced a remote CO2 safety alarm designed for beverage and brewery applications. That helped expand our role within restaurants, breweries, beverage dispensing applications and the broader beverage gas and safety industry.

Over time, our capabilities continued expanding into fixed gas detection, portable gas detection, multi-gas monitoring, analytical equipment and gas equipment services.

The technology evolved because the customer's needs evolved.

But the underlying goal stayed consistent: provide reliable gas detection solutions, educate customers and make gas safety easier to understand.

Your products can evolve.

Your technology can evolve.

Your strategy should evolve.

Your standards shouldn't.

Customer Trust Is Built in the Small Moments

When we talk about building a successful business, it is easy to focus on the major milestones: opening another location, landing a large customer, introducing a new product or celebrating an anniversary.

But reputations are rarely built from just one major event.

They are built through hundreds and eventually thousands of smaller interactions.

  • Did you return the customer's call?
  • Did the driver arrive when promised?
  • Did the technician understand the equipment?
  • Did the installer leave the customer's facility better than they found it?
  • Did your sales rep recommend the solution the customer actually needed
  • Did someone follow up after the installation?

None of these actions sounds revolutionary.

But do them consistently for five, ten or twenty years and you have created something competitors cannot easily duplicate, trust.

Why Reputation Matters in the Gas Distribution Industry

Relationships have always been one of the strongest parts of the industrial gas and beverage gas industries.

Distributors rely on manufacturers. Manufacturers rely on distributors and installers. Restaurants, breweries and other end users rely on all of us to provide dependable equipment, gas supply, technical knowledge and servicing.

Organizations like the Gases and Welding Distributors Association (GAWDA), International Beverage Dispensing Equipment Association (IBDEA) and Compressed Gas Association (CGA) are just some organizations that strengthen those relationships by bringing together the people responsible for moving our industry forward.

Many people in this industry have worked together for years, sometimes decades.

That means your reputation travels with you.

Customers and industry partners remember who follows through. They remember who answers when there is a problem. They remember the companies willing to provide technical support even when there is not an immediate sale attached to it.

Consistency protects that reputation.

20 Years in Business Is Really Thousands of Small Decisions

As CO2Meter celebrates its 20th anniversary, I've spent some time thinking about what actually gets a company to a milestone like this.

And, I have realized that there is not one answer.

There was not one product, customer, tradeshow or business decision that got us here.

There were thousands of decisions.

Showing up at another industry event.

Answering another technical question.

Listening when a distributor needed something different.

Improving a gas detection product.

Training another customer.

Supporting another installation.

Helping solve another gas safety challenge.

And then coming back the next morning and doing it again.

That is what long-term business success often looks like.

It is not always exciting and it certainly does not happen overnight.

It is consistency compounded over time.

Innovation and Consistency Can Work Together

One of the lessons from CO2Meter's first 20 years is that innovation and consistency are not opposites.

You need both.

Innovation allows a company to respond to new technologies, changing customer expectations and emerging applications.

Consistency ensures customers continue receiving the level of quality, knowledge and service they expect while those changes happen.

For CO2Meter, that has meant expanding from our early gas sensing products into broader CO2 safety monitoring, multi-gas detection, analytical solutions and service capabilities while maintaining our focus on education and solving real-world gas detection challenges.

For a beverage gas distributor, consistency might mean expanding into new equipment or services without sacrificing dependable deliveries.

For an installer, it could mean adopting new technology while maintaining the same installation standards customers have trusted for years.

The specific strategy will be different for every business.

The principle is the same:

Keep improving without losing the qualities that made customers trust you in the first place.

What Has 20 Years Taught Us About Building a Successful Business?

If I had to summarize 20 years of lessons into a few ideas, they would be simple:

  • Listen to your customers
  • Adapt when the industry changes
  • Invest in relationships
  • Educate instead of simply selling
  • Do the small things well

And above everything else: be consistent.

Keep Showing Up

Twenty years is a milestone everyone at CO2Meter is incredibly proud to celebrate, but it is also a reminder that businesses are not built overnight

Neither are reputations.

They are built delivery by delivery, installation by installation, conversation by conversation, customer by customer and year by year.

Whether you are delivering beverage gas, manufacturing equipment, installing beverage systems, providing gas detection equipment or servicing customers in the field, you do not have to reinvent your business every day

You just have to keep improving and keep showing up.

Because products will change. Technology will evolve. Safety requirements will continue to develop. And our industry will keep moving forward.

But the companies customers continue to trust will be the ones that consistently do what they say they're going to do.
