GSS Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Sensors to Ensure Gas Detection Safety
While many industry leaders alike may be aware of the importance of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) monitoring in terms of overall well-being, there is a huge demand for CO2 sensing technologies when it comes to ensuring safety and compliance.
Whether you are looking for a gas sensor or detector to monitor concentrations within your industry there is nothing more ideal than a sensor that is fast, accurate, low powered, and can easily integrate into harsh rugged environments.
Because not all carbon dioxide sensors are created equally, these features may be hard to come by. A sensor that is ideal for measuring indoor air quality for example, will not work to measure concentrations used in incubation or beverage dispensing. Further shining light on the importance in selecting the proper sensing technology.
Meet the ExplorIR®-M CO2 Sensor.
At the heart of any gas detector is a sensor which monitors and repeatedly measures the gas concentrations to indicate higher than normal levels and ensure safety for those working in and around hazardous gases. The ExplorIR®-M is no stranger to the safety industry providing customers with a compact, robust, and easily integrated solution across multiple gas monitoring systems. This sensor is one of our most popular solutions and is commonly used in battery-powered applications or fully autonomous operation.
- ExplorIR®-M – an incredibly low-power and vibration resistant performer, measuring up to 100% carbon dioxide specific for industrial, scientific, engineering, safety, or OEM applications.
- ExplorIR®-W – a high performance, low power CO2 sensor which measures up to 60% CO2 concentrations, suitable for measuring in closed-loop sampling applications or integrated into portable sampling instruments.
The ExplorIR® CO2 sensors are ideal for a variety of safety industries and applications, all standing by the sensor technologies for reliability, accuracy and easy integration.
The overall capabilities of the ExplorIR® range have resulted in large advancements and innovation, displayed in a vast majority of applications throughout the world.
How to Measure CO2 in Safety Applications?
Understanding the importance of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in applications such as restaurants, beverage dispensing, agriculture, and healthcare is the first step; yet controlling the amount of CO2 that can be added can be done by several methods. The most popular method is by utilizing cost-effective gas sensor technologies – specifically designed to monitor, CO2.
By utilizing carbon dioxide sensing solutions at the heart of a device or detector, individuals can have peace of mind and ensure that they are continually receiving ample measurements to indicate if a specific indoor environment has exceeded safety thresholds and if it is suitable for occupants, patrons, and employees.
Take for instance the restaurant and beverage industry, the ExplorIR-M has long been a sensor that is incorporated in many CO2Meter devices due to its high accuracy, low-power, and fast response in measurement detection.
The restaurant and beverage industry heavily relies on carbon dioxide safety and the ability to detect potential CO2 leaks which if not monitored, could result in fatalities and severe negative health effects for those that come in contact with higher than normal concentrations.

In addition, another application which heavily relies on the ExplorIR®-W range is industrial safety industries. At CO2Meter, we constantly receive inquibration environments it poses an ideal solution for those looking to monitor in high humidity and industrial spaces.
How does a Carbon Dioxide (CO2) sensor work?
The overall measurement of the CO2 levels has most commonly been based on nondispersive infrared technologies and is determined using the Beer-Lambert law. This law states that the loss of light intensity when it propagates in a medium is directly proportional to intensity and path length. CO2 molecules absorb in the mid-range infrared – between 4.2 to 4.4.
Light is emitted from the LED and then directly passes through the sensor, reflecting off the optic found internally. Some light is absorbed depending on the level of CO2 present. The remaining light then reaches a photodiode at the opposite end of the chamber and is converted into an electrical current. This output is then interpreted to give an accurate CO2 measurement reading. This whole process is referred to as Non-dispersive Infrared (NDIR) technology.
